No fewer than 35 princes in Ijesaland have expressed interest in occupying the vacant stool of Owa Obokun.
The stool became vacant on September 11 after the Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, joined his ancestors.
Sources close to the Ijesa Traditional Council told Saturday PUNCH that 35 candidates, including some notable indigenes in Ijesaland have come forward to show their interest in the stool.
“As of the last count, about 35 candidates have registered interest in succeeding the late monarch,” said one of the sources.
However, the Ogboni of Ipole-Ijesa, Oba Omokehinde Oyeleye, who doubles as the chairman of the Atakumosa East Traditional Council, has allayed the fears of all princes and aspirants to the vacant stool, promising that the selection process will be fair.
Oba Oyeleye spoke in the wake of the alleged clandestine installation of Dukes (Lojas) by the Atakumosa East Local Government Traditional Council.
In a statement signed by Oba Oyeleye’s Personal Assistant, James Olusanya, the monarch said he abhors favoritism but relishes openness and transparency.
The monarch restated his commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all aspiring princes seeking to occupy Owa’s stool, encouraging them to come forward for the dukedom of their choice.
