The House of Representatives Member representing Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Atakumosa East, and Atakumosa West Federal Constituency, Hon. Sanya Omirin, has expressed optimism about the successful elevation of Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, to a Federal Medical Centre (FMC).
Hon. Omirin who spoke with journalists revealed that a bill seeking the hospital’s upgrade has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
He assured his constituents that all efforts are in place to ensure the bill’s passage, emphasizing its potential to transform healthcare delivery in Ijesaland and Osun State at large.
“All hands are on deck to ensure the successful passage of this bill,” Omirin stated, expressing gratitude to his colleagues, especially members of the Green Chamber from Osun State, for their unwavering support.
The bill, which was first read on November 20, 2024, seeks to amend the Federal Medical Centre Act of 2022 to establish the Federal Medical Centre, Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
On Tuesday, the Deputy Speaker, Rep. Benjamin Kalu presided over the plenary session where the bill advanced to the committee stage.
In his submission, Hon. Omirin highlighted the importance of the proposed upgrade saying “It is a timely and necessary intervention aimed at addressing the critical health needs of the people of Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Oriade, and Obokun regions of Osun State. The Federal Medical Centre will bridge the gap in our local healthcare system and offer a robust and effective system for not just Ijesaland but the entire Osun State.”
He noted that Ilesa, with a population of over 400,000 people and serving as the headquarters of six local governments, relies heavily on Wesley Guild Hospital, an annex of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife saying this dependency has left many residents, especially farmers and artisans, struggling with exorbitant private healthcare costs.
“The establishment of this facility is essential. It will provide affordable and accessible healthcare to the people of Ilesa and surrounding areas. Leveraging the existing structures at Wesley Guild Hospital will make the upgrade seamless, ensuring the facility meets the standard of a Federal Medical Centre,” Omirin added.
The proposed upgrade is expected to significantly improve medical services and infrastructure in Ijesaland, cementing the hospital’s status as a critical healthcare hub.
