An operative of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, Peter Samuel Tope, has been confirmed dead following an alleged unprovoked attack by a soldier in Ijeda, Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, July 26, at about 5:45 p.m.

The soldier, identified as Opejobi Fiyinfoluwa, who is said to be newly recruited into the Nigerian Army, reportedly attacked the 35-year-old officer while he was on a motorcycle.

According to a statement by the Corps Commander, Dr. Hon. Isaac Adekunle Omoyele, the suspect, dressed in military camouflage, had earlier visited the Amotekun station in Ijebu-Jesa where he allegedly expressed hostility toward the security outfit, claiming that one of his aims for joining the army was to “deal decisively” with Amotekun personnel.

Eyewitnesses said the soldier, alongside some unidentified individuals, later intercepted Officer Tope, pulled him off his motorcycle, and hit him on the head with a blunt object.

The attack, which reportedly lasted about 20 minutes, left the officer critically injured.

He was rushed to Wesley Hospital in Ilesa by fellow Amotekun officers and the matter was immediately reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa as well as to the Engineering Cantonment in Ede, under the command of Lt. Col. Yunusa Isyaku.

Despite medical efforts, Peter Samuel Tope was pronounced dead in the early hours of today.

The development has sparked outrage in the community and raised concerns over the relationship between security agencies in the state.

The Osun Amotekun Corps has called for a full investigation into the incident and demanded that those involved be brought to justice.

Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Yusuf Idowu Abass, confirmed that investigations are ongoing and promised that updates would be made available as events unfold.
