A funeral ceremony in Ilesa turned tragic when a ceremonial gun salute by local hunters accidentally claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy and left four others injured.
Eyewitnesses said that about six hunters had travelled from Plateau State to participate in the burial of an elderly woman, at the invitation of one of her children.
The tragedy occurred during the traditional gun salute in honour of the deceased.
One of the hunters’ firearms reportedly misfired, hitting the teenage boy who died instantly, while four other mourners sustained injuries.
Panic ensued as the hunters immediately fled the scene, while the injured were rushed to Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, for medical attention.
The deceased boy has since been buried beside the woman whose funeral turned into a sorrowful event.
Police have confirmed the arrest of the hunters involved and the individual who invited them to the ceremony.
Meanwhile, contrary to reports circulating on social media suggesting that five people died, police authorities have confirmed only one casualty as of the time of filing this report.
