As part of its 60th-anniversary celebrations, The Premier Social Club in Ijesaland, Ilesa Social Elite Club has announced the launch of a football competition for secondary schools across the six local government areas of Ijesaland.

The Ilesa Social Elite Club, established in 1964, proudly holds its place as the premier club in Ijeshaland, standing tall among the community of clubs in Nigeria.

While many organizations from that era have faded, the club has not only survived but has thrived, adapting to the dynamic changes within society.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday at the Club House in Isokun, Ilesa, the club’s president, Barrister Babatunde Akinshola disclosed that the competition aims to nurture young talent and boost the profile of football in Ijesaland.

Barrister Akinshola emphasized the global appeal and financial benefits of football, citing renowned players like Ronaldo, Kanu Nwankwo, and JJ Okocha as examples of the success possible in the sport.

He encouraged the youth to pursue football as a pathway to personal growth and community development.

“But why a football competition, you may ask? The simple reason is that football is a recognized talent worldwide and one of the highest-earning sports today,” Akinshola explained.

“Yes, it is possible. We, too, can have the next football giant from Ijeshaland. We can do it. And the best way to accomplish this is by encouraging our young ones to explore the God-given talent for their personal welfare and the development of their community.

Just imagine for a moment that Ronaldo is an Ijesha man! Okay, let’s bring it home. Close your eyes and imagine that Kanu Nwakwo or JJ Okocha were Ijesas!

“Imagine the glory and pride this would bring to our community, along with the worldwide exposure and acclaim it would bring to our fatherland.”

“I know virtually everyone here knows how much footballers are earning all over the world. But beyond what footballers earn is the glory that accompanies any great footballer.

“Therefore, it is our sincere desire that competitions of this nature will bring out our best and project them to the world. I am looking forward to when the next Messi will be from Africa, and indeed from Ijesaland.

To realize this dream, we need to catch them young. And this is what this Club is doing, as part of our 60th Anniversary.”

Barrister Akinshola also expressed hope that the competition would become a regular event and invited partnerships from individuals, groups, and organizations.

He thanked the club members for their support and enthusiasm in celebrating this milestone anniversary.

“It is also our desire to make this competition a regular event in Ijeshaland. And this is where we extend our hands of fellowship to any other individual, groups, or organizations who wish to partner with us in achieving this goal. Our doors are open, and you can talk to any one of our members if you wish to partner with us or to sponsor the next tournament.”

“As we go to the football field, I want to urge our footballers to put in their best; put all your talents on display; let’s see those Maradonic moves, the Odegbami-like calculations.

Prince Kunle Ogunmokun, a prominent sports figure and Football Match Commissioner in Nigeria, praised the club’s efforts, stressing the role of sports in developing discipline and teamwork among young people.

He encouraged other organizations to emulate the Ilesa Social elite club’s example in fostering athletic potential.

In the opening match of the football competition , Ilesa Grammar School secured a 5-3 victory over United Anglican Grammar School, setting a high standard for the tournament ahead.
