IJESALAND: THE JOURNEY AHEAD

Spread the love

Located at the Northeastern part of Yorubaland, Ijesa Obokun Kingdom was founded by Owa Obokun Ajibogun who was the youngest son of Oduduwa. Ijesaland is surrounded by rivers like Owena, Osun and Oora. Owaluse, the fifth Owa Obokun made Ilesa, the royal capital city of Ijesaland which exists till date.

Interestingly, Ijesaland has so far been ruled by 40 monarchs (6 females and 34 males). The recent glorious passage of the 40th Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II CFR LLD has marked the end and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Ijesaland.

The late foremost traditional ruler added dignity, value and pride to the throne of his ancestors.

His 42- year reign attracted unprecedented developments to the nook and cranny of Ijesaland, ranging from education, electrification, health, security, to mention but afew.

The octogenarian bid his people farewell even when his wisdom and rare leadership skills were needed most. Now that the exalted royal throne is vacant, what next?

This has been the question on the lips of both the young and old of Ijesaland. Traditionally, the exit of Oba Aromolaran II has put Ijesas all over the world into a mourning period of 90 days which must be well observed and respected.

It’s a period to reminisce on the legacy left behind by the reverred leader.

It’s worthy to state that as we mourn our departed royal father, Bilaro or Olu-Odo ruling house whose turn to produce the next Owa Obokun must consult widely as being dictated by the custom and tradition of Ijesa Obokun Kingdom.

As there is no age limit to who becomes the next Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, educational background, level of exposure, commitment to the development of Ijesaland, general acceptability by the people and lots more must be considered before any Prince or Princess (as the case may be) emerges.

Owa Obokun Adimula’s stool is a traditional institution on its own, ifa oracle must be duly consulted and respected so as to have a greater Ijesaland of our own.
