The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ilesa Branch, has strongly refuted a viral report claiming that a Magistrate Court in Ilesa ruled that a woman, Rhoda Adu, must pay ₦150,000 in damages to her boyfriend, Olapitan Sola, for emotional distress after failing to visit him despite collecting a ₦3,000 transport fare.
In an official statement issued by the NBA Ilesa Branch Chairman, Raymond Oki, Esq., the association dismissed the report as entirely false and misleading.
“We categorically state that this story is unfounded and has no basis in fact. There is no Magistrate in Ilesa by the name Akogun Oludare, and no such case has been heard in any Magistrate Court within the Ilesa Magisterial District,” the statement clarified.
The NBA expressed concern over the rapid spread of misinformation, urging both the media and the public to verify legal reports from credible sources before circulation.
“We urge media outlets to exercise due diligence in fact-checking before publishing reports that could mislead the public and cause unnecessary distractions. The legal profession values accuracy and truth, and we remain committed to setting the record straight whenever falsehoods arise,” the NBA Ilesa chairman added.
The NBA Ilesa Branch reassured the public that it remains dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the legal system and ensuring that only verified information is disseminated.
